Eurfa now available in dictd format! (14/03/2007)

There are now more ways to enjoy Eurfa - files for use with the dictd dictionary server protocol are available. This allows Eurfa to be used with desktop clients like Kdict (part of the KDE Network module), and means that the excellent popup translator KTranslator is supported. See this new section of the website for background, files, and screenshots.

Grammar-checker now available!(15/02/2007)

The first version of Klebran, the first ever Welsh grammar checker under a free (GPL), has been developed. It uses Eurfa to check the spelling of words in a piece of text, and to supply a meaning for each one.

Eurfa Version 2! (15/02/2007)

This website uses Version 2 of Eurfa, now available on the Download page. Version 2 increases the number of base words by 23%, to almost 13,000.

What is Eurfa (http://www.eurfa.org.uk)?

Eurfa is the first substantial free (GPLed) dictionary for Welsh. For more details, see Background. Eurfa currently contains around 10,000 base words (including plurals), and an additional 400,000 mutated and verbal forms based on these (the first time that such forms have been included in a Welsh dictionary). This will be of use to Welsh learners, who may not be immediately aware, as a first-language speaker would be, that ebyrth is the plural of aberth, or that radd is a soft-mutated form of gradd, or that gwelsom is related to gweld.

Because of its free licensing, all the contents of Eurfa can be downloaded to your PC, so that you can access it locally, share it with your friends or colleagues, amend it, or even build new applications (eg crossword generators) with it. For more details, see Download.

Two demo applications, Rhymer and Translist, both of which use Eurfa, are also offered.

Enjoy!
